Richard Thompson
Born 19551973 - 76 BA (physics), University of Oxford 1976 - 80 DPhil (Atomic Spectroscopy), University of Oxford 1981 - 82 Post-Doctoral R A, Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe 1982 - 83 Post-Doctoral R A, University of Oxford 1983 - 86 Researcher, National Physical Laboratory, Teddington 1986 - 92 Lecturer, Imperial College 1992 - 2003 Reader, Imperial College 2003 - present Professor, Imperial College Richard did his DPhil in the area of atomic spectroscopy (pressure broadening of spectral lines). He then spent a year working at the Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe on laser spectroscopy of unstable isotopes. After a further year in Oxford working mainly on the Oxford atomic parity violation experiment he moved to the National Physical Laboratory where he was involved in the first UK experiment on laser cooling of trapped ions. He moved to Imperial College as a lecturer in 1986 where he set up experiments on quantum optics with laser cooled trapped ions. He is currently involved in practical quantum information processing studies with trapped ions. He is now a Reader in Physics at Imperial College and has other research interests in the physics of music. Danny Segal
Born 19601980 - 83 BSc (physics), University of Manchester 1984 - 88 PhD, Imperial College 1988 - 91 Post-Doctoral R A, University of Oxford 1991 - 93 Post-Doctoral R A, Imperial College 1993 - 98 EPSRC Advanced Fellow, Imperial College 1998 - 2001 Lecturer 2001 - 2004 Senior Lecturer 2004 - 2011 Reader 2011 - present Professor and Senior Tutor of Physics Danny Segal did his PhD and early post-doctoral work in collision physics. He is currently involved in the ion trapping experiments in the field of quantum information processing and has an interest in cavity-QED with trapped ions which is maintained through a collaboration with the NPL group. He was also involved in a collaboration with the Open University (UK) and the University of Hertfordshire (UK) on giant Kerr nonlinearities in EIT systems. He is coordinator of the QGATES collaboration. Dan Crick
Born 1982 Dan completed his PhD in 2009. He is working on laser cooling and manipulation of small numbers of ions in Penning traps. Dan is funded by the EU FP7 PICC research project. Shailen Bharadia2000 - 2004 BSc Physics, Imperial College London 2005 - 2006 MSc Optics and Photonics, Imperial College London 2007 - 2011 PhD, Imperial College London 2011 - present Postdoctorial Researcher, Imperial College London Shailen is an experimental physicist. He recently completed his PhD on Laser Spectroscopy of highly charged ions, with the SPECTRAP collaboration. The purpose of this project is to test QED in high field to higher orders than previous studied. His PhD was finded by GSI. Sandeep Mavadia
Born 19862004 - 2008 MSci (Physics), Imperial College London 2009 - present PhD, Imperial College London Sandeep is a PhD student funded by the EPSRC. He is working on single ion experiments in Penning traps. Joe Goodwin
Born 19852005 - 2009 MSci (Physics), Bristol University 2010 - present PhD, Imperial College Joe is a PhD student funded by the Controlled Quantum Dynamics DTC. He is working on sub-Doppler laser cooling of ions in Penning traps. Graham Stutter
Born 19852006 - 2010 MPhys (Physics), University of Manchester 2011 - present PhD, Imperial College Graham is an PhD student funded by the Controlled Quantum Dynamics DTC. He is working on laser frequency stabilisation for trapped ion applications.
